Downtown doesn’t disappoint ghouls’ Mass. Street masquerade
Jennifer Stock saw some good ones Tuesday, but the kid in the robot outfit had to be the best.
“He had batteries in his chest,” she explained, handing out candy outside of the Toy Store. “His head kind of lit up. It was pretty creative.”
Creative was the credo for the annual Halloween march down Massachusetts Street, where hundreds of kids, parents and even some older revelers collected candy from downtown merchants.
Everyone from Harry Potter – at least three or four of those – to a swath of zombies and princesses tromped the downtown sidewalks Tuesday night in search of goodies.
Plus, tons of kids donned the costume of space’s most feared villain: Darth Vader.
Three-year-old Erik Grafel was part of the Vader clan Tuesday. His mother, Tayloe, blamed the Star Wars theme on dad, Matt. But Matt Grafel said his son enjoyed the space adventures too.
“I think he’s a bigger fan than I am,” Matt Grafel said while navigating the packed sidewalks.
Many merchants downtown viewed the trick-or-treat event as a safe alternative for young children and families not wanting to trudge through neighborhoods and knock on doors.
The foyer of the law offices of Riling, Burkhead & Nitcher, 808 Mass., doubled as a miniature haunted house, complete with red lights, a dancing skeleton hanging in the corner and a stereo creaking out spooky sounds.
Bobbi Reid walked in, leading a group of kids.
“Oh, it’s just a lawyer’s office,” Reid told the kids.
Inside, attorney Mike Riling was less than scary, handing out candy bars from two massive bowls on the table.
“It’s good for the kids to have a safe place to come and get candy,” Riling said of the downtown trick-or-treating.
Sure, the night is pegged as a kid’s holiday. But adults and even canine friends took the opportunity to show off costumes and indulge in treats.

And Star Wars wasn’t just for kids and dads either. Just ask Yoda … er, Rosie – Amber Nickel’s four-legged buddy who she dyed green for a dog costume contest at Rick’s Place, 846 Ill.
And Rosie’s dog pal Mr. Bean came dressed as – you guessed it – Lord Vader himself, complete with plastic helmet resting above his white and black face.
Of course, the dogs didn’t put these costumes on themselves. No, Nickel got them ready for the big costume contest – a process Rosie, at least, wasn’t crazy about.
“I don’t think Rosie particularly enjoyed her dye job,” Nickel said. “But Bean, he could care less.”
Somewhere – maybe a galaxy far, far away – George Lucas is smiling.
