Walkway plan

To the editor:

When I read that the post office was considering moving closer to Interstate 70, I thought that was an excellent idea.

We can keep the library in the location it is now, and then the post office building could be connected by a walkway over Seventh Street. They have walkways in other cities and towns, and they work out just fine. With the added parking spaces in front and in back of the current post office, it would take care of many needs. I thought the library was built so that it also could be added onto with a second floor. A walkway across Seventh Street would not only give us added space but keep the library in the same location as the Lawrence Senior Center. The added space would take care of the genealogy, historical, computer and microfiche areas; plus all the special selections in the current library.

The taxpayers of Lawrence pay the bills, and it is time to really sit back and think about what is best for the citizens of Lawrence and not what will benefit some developer. If we could have two libraries by keeping one downtown and one in the midwest part of the city that would be ideal. As Lawrence grows, our needs will grow, and certainly another library will be on an agenda in the future with the growth to the west.

I just ask that city officials take time and step back and really look at the possibility of a walkway across Seventh Street.
