Language police
To the editor:
I see that Congress has voted to make English our national language at last. I assume that congressional action makes this decision legally enforceable. That’s good news: It means that I will now finally be able – nay, duty-bound! – to apprehend and punish those of you who commit any errors in grammar or spelling.
After all, if we are going to insist on English only, then we must ensure that what we speak is correct English. Anything less is disrespectful to America and should be a crime. I’ll be watching you! (Please let me know when the Lawrence Police begin recruiting for the English-Enforcement Division.)
Gavin Bruce,
Lawrence
