Guard officer to speak at Memorial Day event

Brig. Gen. Jonathan Small, of Topeka, will speak Monday at a Memorial Day service at Memorial Park Cemetery, 1517 E. 15th St.

Members of the Alford-Clarke Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 852 will play host to the public ceremony that begins at 11 a.m.

Small is commander of the Kansas Army National Guard and an assistant adjutant general. He earned a law degree from Washburn University and served as the Kansas Judge Advocate General from 1984 to 1999.

Members of Dorsey-Liberty Post No. 14 of the American Legion will offer a similar ceremony at 10 a.m. Monday in the veterans plot at Oak Hill Cemetery.

To set up for the VFW ceremony, post and auxiliary members will meet at 8 a.m. Saturday to place flags on graves at Memorial Park Cemetery, said Ila Russell, treasurer for the VFW post's ladies auxiliary.
