Fundraiser to assist History Day efforts

Parents of 13 students – eight from Central Junior High, five from Lawrence High School – headed for the National History Day competition in Washington, D.C., will host a garden party fundraiser at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Lawrence Women’s Club, 1941 Mass.

The event will feature Caribbean food prepared by Serina Hearn, refreshments, music and presentations by the students.

“I’ve helped judge National History Day competitions on the state level, and they are incredibly competitive. Hundreds of kids take part in them,” said Lawrence school board president Leonard Ortiz. “The fact that we have so many kids going means a lot.”

One-fourth of the Kansas students taking part in the June 11-15 competition are from Lawrence. Students will compete in four categories: documentaries, performances, papers and displays.
