Lawrence man arrested in beer theft

Police arrested a man during the weekend for robbing a woman of a case of beer in a south Lawrence parking lot.

The victim, age 37, told police she was going to visit a friend about 4:15 a.m. Saturday at 2350 Ridge Ct. when she got out of her vehicle and a man she didn’t know approached her. She said the man grabbed a 30-pack of Keystone Light beer she had set on the ground, tried to grab a box she was holding, and punched her in the chest.

Her purse fell to the ground and some of the contents fell out. The man made off with the beer and a container of her prescription pills, according to a report.

She called police and gave a description of the man’s vehicle. Officers found it near 19th and Massachusetts streets and found the beer inside, Lawrence Police spokeswoman Kim Murphree said.

The suspect, Melvin English II, 31, Lawrence, was arrested and charged Monday with robbery.
