Lawrence motorcyclist injured in collision

A Lawrence man was injured and flown to a Kansas City, Kan., hospital Sunday afternoon after his motorcycle collided with a car that turned from an outside lane in Baldwin, authorities said.

Gary Freitas, 66, was not wearing a helmet when his 1997 Gold Wing motorcycle struck a 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee driven by Richard Ridley, 52, Topeka, according to a Kansas Highway Patrol report.

Both vehicles were headed west on U.S. Highway 56 at 12:52 p.m. when Ridley tried to turn left onto Eighth Street in Baldwin. He attempted to turn from the right-hand lane, in front of Freitas. Ridley and his three passengers were not injured, according to the accident report.

Medics used a helicopter to fly Freitas to the University of Kansas Hospital in Kansas City, Kan.
