A low blow
To the editor:
After reading the May 13 Saturday Column regarding the results of the poll that was taken during kindergarten roundup, I couldn’t resist asking my husband, “Honey, would you like to have a three-car garage?” Of course, my car enthusiast husband said, “Well, yes!” But then came the kicker, “OK. Would you be willing to pay $240 a month to have that three-car garage?” His answer was sadly, “No.”
Now, by your assessment of the results of the kindergarten polls, it should be assumed that he must expect to get something for nothing. In neither case is this true. To make that claim is simply jumping to conclusions. Regarding free all-day kindergarten, there was never a demand from the parents for the district to provide it. The district brought the proposal to the parents.
The only results that truly mattered in this proposal were from the second question: “Are you willing to pay $240 per month to send your child to all-day kindergarten?”
My husband I are proud parents of a child of next year’s kindergarten class, and we based our decisions on what we truly felt was best for our child. I also know from heartfelt discussions with many other parents that this was an intense decision for all of us. It truly felt like a hit below the belt to have the results of those decisions belittled and presented as an example of greedy entitlement. I would bet my two-car garage home that it was never, ever that; not for one single parent.
