KDHE plans hearing on new Westar landfill

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment plans a hearing Tuesday concerning a proposed landfill north of Lawrence.

Westar Energy is requesting the 57-acre landfill on property at 1302 N. 1800 Road. It would be used for disposal of coal combustion ash and replace Westar’s current landfill, which is scheduled to close in 2007.

The meeting will be at 7 p.m. in the library at Deerfield School, 101 Lawrence Ave. A presentation on the proposal will be followed by an opportunity for the public to get information on the review process.

The meeting will not cover zoning or land use issues. The project was approved last year by the Douglas County Commission.

Now KDHE must determine whether the proposed site meets required location, geological and environmental standards before issuing a permit.
