Crews search river for person clinging to wood

Emergency crews searched the Kansas River by boat and helicopter Thursday morning after a driver reported seeing someone clinging to a piece of driftwood in the water under the Lecompton bridge.

But it may have been a mistaken report. Douglas County Sheriff’s spokeswoman Kari Wempe said the search turned up nothing, and crews gave up searching the area at 11:30 a.m., about two hours after the report came in.

Sheriff’s deputies first went to check the river near the Lecompton bridge, then went downstream to check the water near Riverfront Park in Lawrence. Also joining in the search were two boats from Lawrence-Douglas County Fire & Medical and a Kansas Highway Patrol helicopter and troopers.
