Ohio Street to get brick makeover

A stretch of Ohio Street in Old West Lawrence will get a new brick makeover with the help of city and state funding, the Kansas Department of Transportation announced Monday.

The project will span between Sixth and Eighth streets along Ohio, replacing the asphalt overlay with new and restored bricks while keeping the limestone curbing intact. The city will pay $196,000 of the nearly $1 million project, with the state paying the difference. Funding for the project will be available during the 2008 fiscal year.

The project was selected as one of 18 statewide included in KDOT’s Transportation Enhancement Projects. The projects selected fell in three categories: historic, pedestrian/bicycle and scenic/environmental.

The state also allocated money for a streetscaping project in Eudora, which will replace sidewalks, lights and landscaping along Main Street between Seventh and Ninth streets.
