Volunteers hope to give away more than 400 helmets to area children at the annual Lawrence Helmet Fair from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday at Haskell Indian Nations University.

Area businesses help City Hall underwrite part of the costs each year for the helmet giveaway. Lawrence-Douglas County Fire & Medical began the helmet safety program in 1996 as a way to protect bikers and skaters.

The event also will feature many other activities and safety demonstrations for children and their parents.
