Ball raises pot of gold for LMH renovations

The 630 people who attended Saturday’s Hearts of Gold Ball helped raise at least $100,000 for emergency room renovations at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.

“We are delighted that the entire community has showed up, and we appreciate everyone’s gifts,” Beverly Smith Billings, president of Alvamar Inc. and a capital campaign co-chairwoman, said.

Partygoers at the black-tie affair also participated in silent and live auctions to help raise additional money during the event at the Wakarusa Corporate Centre near 18th Street and Wakarusa Drive.

The ball coinciding with the capital campaign was the first in three years; the ball is usually biennial. About 150 volunteers helped plan the event for six months, said Jan McCullough, a co-chairwoman for the steering committee.

Also this week, the LMH Endowment Assn. reached a major milestone of $5 million in its capital campaign to help renovate the hospital. The drive for $8 million will help with the $40 million improvement to LMH.

“As Lawrence continues to grow, we need a quality health facility for all of us,” said Smitty Belcher, of Huxtable & Associates.
