Carnegie Library’s future on agenda

The future of the vacant Carnegie Library building at Ninth and Vermont streets will be up for discussion by city commissioners at their 6:35 p.m. meeting tonight.

The Lawrence Parks and Recreation Department has submitted more detailed information about how it would use the building as a new community center, offering low-cost meeting space and expanded recreation classes.

The department estimates the center would break even by generating about $90,000 a year in fees, though about $55,000 worth of equipment would need to be purchased the first year. The department said the building would allow several of its dancing classes to be expanded and possibly would allow new classes to be offered.

Parks and recreation leaders are competing against the nonprofit Americana Music Academy, which wants the building for its operations. Its leaders said early on it would be able to pay for all the building’s expenses without city funding.
