The Kansas Senate today approved a resolution commemorating the 1856 Battle of Black Jack near Baldwin.

The resolution recognizes that the battle was the first of the Civil War not only in Kansas but also of the war. It also refers to the commemoration and events planned for the 150th anniversary of the battle on June 2-3.

The resolution was introduced by Sen. Roger Pine, R-Lawrence, at the request of members of the Black Jack Battlefield Trust.

I've got no problem promoting history, or spending state and local $$ to do it. I just question whether a 'legislative resolution,' of which there are probably a hundred each year, is 1) important news much less, 2) breaking news.

A brief in the Arts section would be the appropriate place to put this fast-developing 150-year old story.
