Lawrence Police captain to retire

Lawrence Police Capt. Kevin Harmon, a 27-year veteran of the department, will officially retire Saturday. His last day on the job was March 18.

Harmon has been eligible to retire for the past two years and said he planned to devote more time to Cosmopolitan, a social-service organization based in Overland Park of which he is international president.

In his years on the force, Harmon oversaw all areas of the department, including patrol, investigations and information technology. He was the head of the department’s “community services division” – which includes training and school-resources officers – for roughly the past five years.

“I’ve really enjoyed having the brand-new guys come in and be totally raw and help them through the academy process and the learning curve and watching many of them blossom into really good officers,” he said.
