House fire blamed on burning candles
Smoke still trickled from upstairs windows Saturday after firefighters extinguished a fire in the 2700 block of Fenwick Road.
The fire began just after 3 p.m. when the homeowner and a roommate apparently left a candle burning in an upstairs bedroom, residents said.
The house had been vacant for some months in preparation for a pending sale. The candles were being used to clear odors from the room.
A call came into the Lawrence-Douglas County Fire & Medical after a neighbor saw smoke billowing out of the upstairs.
Firefighters arrived just before 3:15 and had the fire put out within the hour, fire officials said.
The house, appraised at $175,400, sustained some structural damage, including to the floor, and smoke and water damage, said Division Chief Rob Kort. Kort estimated damage at $45,000.
