Jerry Younger, a resident of rural Douglas County, has been promoted to serve as state transportation engineer and assistant secretary for the Kansas Department of Transportation. Younger assumed his duties last week.

Younger previously served a year as the department’s District One engineer, responsible for 17 counties in northeast Kansas, including Douglas. He joined the department in 1986 after graduating with a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from Kansas University, where he also received a master’s degree in civil engineering.

Younger succeeds Warren Sick, who retired after a 39-year career with the department.

¢ Florida-based National Healing Corp. received Disease-Specific Care Certification for wound care from the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations. National Healing Corp. manages the Wound Healing Center for Lawrence Memorial Hospital and accounts for 20 percent of the nation’s managed and outsourced wound healing centers.

Certifications are reviewed every two years.

LMH’s Wound Healing Center, 1112 W. Sixth St., Suite 109, specializes in the treatment of chronic wounds and non-responsive conditions and offers hospital-based outpatient wound care and hyperbaric oxygen therapy, plus disease management and diabetes care.

¢ Mark Hess, of Realty Executives – Hedges Real Estate, has completed “International Real Estate for Local Markets,” a Certified International Property Specialist course sponsored by the National Association of Realtors. The course, which was in February in San Antonio, fulfilled one of the educational requirements of the CIPS designation. The course focused on problems in international transactions, cultural and historical elements of the client’s region, and marketing properties and services.

¢ Eric Haar, Lawrence, has joined the Federal Home Loan Bank of Topeka as vice president for government relations. Haar, previously campaign manager, field representative, and political designee for U.S. Rep. Jim Ryun, R-Kan., works to communicate the bank’s mission of serving as a source of credit for nearly 900 banks, thrifts and credit unions throughout Kansas, Colorado, Nebraska and Oklahoma.

¢ Ginger Heere, a radiologic technologist at Lawrence Orthopaedic Surgery, recently completed requirements and passed the national advanced certification for Magnetic Resonance Imaging. The certification was granted by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists.

¢ Paul Davis Restoration, of the Lawrence and Topeka area, helped improve a home in Winchester, owned by Bill Peters, a disabled military war veteran. The project was part of Jacksonville, Fla.-based Paul Davis Restoration Inc.’s sixth-annual Paul Davis Restoring America program.

The local company used its resources of time and materials to make improvements to the home, which was in need of front access repairs.

Paul Davis Restoring America is designed to help those who cannot afford or are physically unable to fix up their homes.

Honors and awards

Mary Michener is the winner of CornerBank’s Community Cornerstone Award for March.

Michener served for three years on the Public Transportation Advisory Committee, whose efforts helped lead to establishment of the city’s public transit system in Lawrence. She also served on the board for the Kansas Regional Transit, operator of buses for Douglas County Senior Services and Independence Inc.

She has been a volunteer for a number of social service and youth organizations. Michener owned Adventure Bookstore in downtown Lawrence for 23 years.

CornerBank will make a contribution on behalf of Michener to Health Care Access. A public reception honoring her service is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. Thursday at CornerBank, 4621 W. Sixth St.

¢ The Lawrence Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring Speed Marketing, a new networking opportunity, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday at SpringHill Suites by Marriott, Sixth and New Hampshire streets.

Participants will be seated at an assigned table with up to seven other business people. Participants will have the opportunity to present a 90-second “commercial” about their own business. They also may distribute samples, business cards or other printed materials. There will be a question-and-answer period before rotating to new tables.

The purpose of Speed Marketing is to motivate participants to form a business network, make valuable contacts, experience basic marketing principles and enhance sales skills.

¢ A leadership and customer service workshop will be presented by the Jayhawk Chapter of the Society for Human Resource Management.

The seminar is designed for human resource professionals, business owners and managers. Guest speaker will be Cal LeMon, president of Executive Enrichment Inc., a corporate education and consulting firm. LeMon has served as a senior minister of a large parish and as a chaplain at Harvard University. He then became a senior faculty member with National Seminars Group. LeMon’s topics will be “Building the 14 Carrot Gold Organization” and “Extra-Ordinary Service from Extraordinary People.”

The event will be from 8 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. April 6 at the Lawrence Arts Center, 940 N.H. The cost is $125.

¢ The 12th annual Heart of America Employer Fair will be from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. April 5 at the University of Missouri-Kansas City’s Swinney Recreation Center.

Admission is free to students and alumni of sponsoring schools. More than 70 employers are scheduled to participate in the fair, which is sponsored by 29 Midwestern colleges and universities.
