No joke

To the editor:

Gary Watson’s letter to the editor March 22, what a joke! Although Coach Self may not have accomplished as much in his first three years in the NCAA Tournament as Larry Brown and Roy Williams, he has gone to the Elite Eight. Since then, he has won two straight Big 12 championships, along with a tourney title. He did that with an injured, infighting team last year and a very young team this year.

As for the NCAA tourney, we lost to a good Bucknell team (top 25 with two tourney wins) and Bradley, who also beat a good Pittsburgh team to go to the Sweet 16. Sure, we would have all loved to win more games in the tourney, but 64 teams, who have had good or great seasons, go home losers from the tournament.

A disgrace? And total failure? After approximately 75 wins and two Big 12 championships, plus a tourney title, and going to overtime, with the chance to go to the Final Four his first year, I’ll take that disgrace and failure anytime.

Gary Watson, stay off the bandwagon, as our “joke of a coach” leads us to more championships, and Final Fours, over the next several years.

Tom Boxberger,

Lawrence
