A man approached a police car early Friday at the scene of a traffic accident, climbed in and tried to drive it away, police said.

A Lawrence Police officer was responding to a traffic accident about 1:15 a.m. in the 2200 block of Westdale Road when a 34-year-old Lawrence man, who apparently wasn't involved in the accident, walked up and got into the officer's car, said Sgt. Dan Ward, a Lawrence Police spokesman.

"He was trying to put it in drive while the officer was preventing him from doing so," Ward said.

A report said it appeared the man, identified as Vincent A. Townsend, was under the influence of alcohol. He was arrested on suspicion of attempted felony theft and obstruction and taken to the Douglas County Jail.
