Hidden guns

To the editor:

The Kansas Legislature has overridden the governor’s veto and passed the “conceal and carry law,” allowing people to carry concealed handguns. These guns have one purpose only: to kill and maim other people. It ought to be called the “concealed-carnage” law.

It is unconscionable to hide these guns in the jackets and waistbands of people who can do us harm. Under this law, members of Fred Phelps’ gang can carry concealed guns when they picket a funeral, screaming slurs. Someone exiting a bar while falling-down drunk could be concealing a handgun, lawfully. Doubtless, more police officers will be shot when dealing with people concealing handguns.

The average citizen is not trained to use handguns for anyone’s protection. Take Dick Cheney, who accidentally shot his best friend in the head with a shotgun. I certainly don’t want his like trying to protect me by drawing a concealed revolver in public.

Law enforcement professionals who undergo constant, rigorous training, and can be held accountable on many levels for mistakes or sloppiness.

I would rather that people kept their guns at home, and if there is trouble, just use a cell phone to call for help.
