Fire damages family’s home east of Eudora

A family that lives about one mile east of Eudora escaped without any injuries Thursday evening from a house fire.

Lt. Kari Wempe, of the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, said a woman in the home heard a popping sound about 5:30 p.m. in the basement and discovered sparks coming from a breaker box.

Lt. Dustin McAfee, of the Eudora Township Fire Department, confirmed that during a preliminary investigation firefighters suspect an electrical fire started in the basement and moved up the north wall. It caused about $75,000 in damage to the two-story house, he said.

With her two children, the woman left the home in the 1300 section of East 2300 Road and phoned emergency officials, Wempe said.

The Eudora Fire Department responded, and firefighters also used a tanker truck from Lawrence-Douglas County Fire & Medical.

The American Red Cross is assisting the family.
