Some of Kansas University basketball's biggest stars are helping the Social Service League this year in its annual effort to buy shoes for Lawrence children. The league will be auctioning a quilt signed by 41 current and former KU basketball players and coaches on eBay. The auction is set to begin at 6 tonight. With the quilt Wednesday are designer and quilter Barbara Brackman, left, and quilter Deb Rowden.

A shoe-motif quilt that featured autographs from 41 former Kansas University basketball players sold last week on eBay for $2,651.

The quilt was a Kaw Valley Quilt Guild fundraising project for a Social Service League fund that’s used to buy new shoes for needy children.

“We’re real pleased. This will buy a lot of shoes,” said Deb Rowden, pictured here with Barbara Brackman.

The winning bidder, Rowden said, lives in Lawrence but asked to remain anonymous.

“One of the really neat things to come out of this is that we heard from (former KU player) Greg Dreiling,” Rowden said. “He said he would gather up all the shoes the Dallas Mavericks don’t use in their kids’ camps, and send them to us.” Dreiling works for the Dallas Mavericks. “He sent along a note that said, ‘Big-footed kids need shoes, too,'” she said.
