Lawrence Police were called to investigate thousands of dollars missing from the city’s Parks and Recreation Department.

Police said more than $4,500 in cash and checks was discovered missing from the East Lawrence Recreation Center, 1245 E. 15th St.

The facilities operations supervisor noticed the discrepancy.

Police said a 39-year-old man, who is not from Lawrence, was suspected of stealing the money between January 2005 and March 15, 2006.

The case has been forwarded to the Douglas County District Attorney’s Office for review.
