Huff, Kimball honored as all-league

Lawrence High’s Drew Huff and Free State High’s Lauren Kimball each won spots on the Sunflower League first-team girls basketball squad as selected by the league’s coaches.

Huff, a senior guard, led the Lions in scoring this winter as they finished 9-12 overall and lost to Free State in the opening round of Class 6A sub-state play.

Kimball, a junior guard, led the Firebirds (15-8) in assists and was the second-leading scorer on a team that advanced to the Class 6A state tournament in Emporia.

LHS senior Sydney Wilson and sophomore Danielle Bird made the second team, as did Free State senior Banaka Okwuone and junior Jenna Brantley. Free State junior Kelsey Harrison made honorable mention.

The Sunflower League boys all-league team also had a local flavor, with Free State’s Nick Ayre and Lawrence High’s Tyler Knight and Kristian Pope securing spots.

Ayre, a senior, played the role of defensive stopper for the Firebirds (8-13). Knight and Pope, both seniors, led the Lions (11-11) in scoring and assists, respectively.

Free State senior David Green and juniors Kyle Schreiner and Christian Ballard made honorable mention, as did LHS junior Chance Riley.
