Professor emeritus wins government award

The Lawrence-Douglas County League of Women Voters will award Forrest Swall, Kansas University professor emeritus of social welfare, with the seventh annual Helen Fluker Open and Accessible Government Award.

The award honors a Douglas County resident who has promoted improvement in government. Swall was nominated for his work to inform voters at various candidate forums before local and state elections.

Swall worked with a group that encouraged legislators to pass the Kansas Community Corrections Act of 1977. He also has advocated for legislation to assist with aging, mental health, mental retardation and special education issues.

The award banquet will be at 6 p.m. March 28 at the Smith Center at Brandon Woods Retirement Community, 1501 Inverness Drive. Dinner costs $11 a person. To make a reservation, contact Sara Taliaferro at 842-4051 or sara@happybeetle.com before Tuesday.
