Ted McFarlane identified as injured pedestrian

Ted McFarlane, who helped build Douglas County’s ambulance service during a 30-year career, is recovering at a Kansas City-area hospital after being pinned between two cars in a traffic wreck Sunday evening near 12th and Kentucky streets.

McFarlane, 58, was the pedestrian struck and pinned against another car shortly after 5 p.m. Sunday. He was flown by air ambulance to Kansas City and was listed in good condition Tuesday evening at Overland Park Regional Medical Center.

Lawrence Police are still investigating details of how the wreck happened. McFarlane had not been identified prior to Tuesday.

Starting in 1974, McFarlane served for 22 years as director of Douglas County Ambulance Service, which eventually merged with the Lawrence Fire Department to become Lawrence-Douglas County Fire & Medical.

He retired in 2001 as deputy chief of that agency and is now director of Johnson County Med-Act EMS service.
