Suspect in shooting returns to county

The Gardner man accused of shooting and killing an Olathe man on March 4 in Baldwin has returned to Douglas County.

A Douglas County Sheriff’s officer booked Hinndley Espinales, 25, into the jail Saturday evening, according to jail records. Espinales was driven to Lawrence from Murray County, Okla., after he opted not to fight extradition. He will await court proceedings after Dist. Atty. Charles Branson has charged him with first-degree murder.

Baldwin police say they believe Espinales drove to Oklahoma after the early-morning dispute that included the shooting in Baldwin. He’s suspected of shooting an acquaintance, Alvin M. Sanchez, 27.

Baldwin Police Chief Mike McKenna said Sanchez was shot at least once in the head and several times in the body after a fight that focused on Sanchez’s wife. Sanchez later died from his injuries.
