City commission agrees to protect climate

City commissioners unanimously agreed Lawrence should become the 210th city in the country to sign the U.S. Mayor’s Climate Protection Agreement.

The agreement is a pledge by the city to follow the general guidelines of the Kyoto Protocol, which targets reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 7 percent compared to 1990 levels.

The Kyoto Protocol has been adopted by 141 countries, but the U.S. has not adopted the agreement because policymakers concluded the agreement does not treat the U.S fairly compared to other industrial countries.

Commissioners directed staff members to prepare a report on how to increase efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and catalog what efforts the city already undertakes.
