Highlights from the Kansas Legislature

Highlights of Tuesday’s activities at the Kansas Legislature:

¢ The House voted 63-58 against repealing a 2004 law that allows illegal immigrants to pay lower rates normally reserved for Kansas residents at state universities, community colleges and technical colleges.

¢ The Senate Federal and State Affairs Committee agreed to sponsor Senate leaders’ plan to expand gambling in Kansas, voting to introduce it, with hearings scheduled for Thursday.

Also:

¢ Legislators learned that the state collected about $3.7 million more in revenues than anticipated in February.

– House and Senate committees continued to review multiyear education funding proposals drafted by their chambers’ leaders.

¢ Coming to the Statehouse to lobby legislators were about 100 members of Americans for Prosperity, which supports constitutional limits on spending, tax increases and governments’ ability to force property sales for economic development.
