Sex offender discovered at youth outreach center
Police are looking into whether a registered sex offender did anything improper by visiting a downtown youth ministry center.
Officers went to Dad’s Place, 2 E. Ninth St., about 10 p.m. Friday to respond to a report of a battery.
While interviewing witnesses, they made contact with a 22-year-old man who wasn’t directly involved in the battery and eventually learned he was a registered sex offender with a past conviction for aggravated indecent solicitation of a child.
The man told police he was no longer on parole and that he wasn’t restricted from being around young people, Lawrence Police spokeswoman Kim Murphree said. He told officers he had just moved to Lawrence and hadn’t yet updated his address on the county’s offender registry.
As of Monday, police were trying to verify his statements and get in contact with his last known parole officer. He was not arrested.
Workers from Dad’s Place – a youth outreach center run by Mustard Seed Christian Fellowship – told police they’d never seen the man before, according to a report.
