Time to move SLT
To the editor:
Two days ago I had occasion to drive from South Iowa Street to Wakarusa Drive via the western half of the South Lawrence Trafficway. It was a genuine pleasure to drive that distance so quickly and bypass all that traffic. I live east of Iowa Street and would be pleased to see the eastern half of the trafficway completed.
Every few weeks there is an article or letter suggesting the eastern half should be constructed at 32nd Street. Proponents claim that most Lawrence residents support this plan and we should just do it and get it done with. Somehow, I am not completely convinced that most Lawrence residents do support this solution. I am convinced, however, that this highway will not be constructed through land that is sacred to Native Americans or through the Baker Wetlands.
This is a plan which has been proposed for years and it is a plan which has been opposed for years. And it is a plan which will be opposed as long as it is presented. A highway will not be built which will defile the wetlands and desecrate this sacred land.
This is not the time for us to turn away, swallow hard and let this profane plan continue. It is the time for those who are responsible for this plan, whoever they are, to give this up and move on to something else.
Will Lunn,
Lawrence
