KU speech features ex-Iraqi nuclear scientist

Mahdi Obeidi, Saddam Hussein’s former chief nuclear scientist, will speak at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in Budig Hall on Kansas University’s campus.

Obeidi, author of “The Bomb in My Garden,” is the featured speaker for Student Union Activities and Student Senate’s annual Student Lecture Series.

In 2003, after Hussein’s ouster, Obeidi contacted U.S. intelligence personnel and led them to the spot in his yard where he had buried plans and parts of a uranium enrichment device. The plans remain the largest piece of evidence that Iraq had a strategy for obtaining weapons of mass destruction.

The free event is open to the public. Vouchers may be picked up at the SUA Box Office on the fourth floor of the Kansas Union. For information, call the SUA box office at 864-SHOW or go online to www.suaevents.com.
