To the editor:

The Feb. 28 article in the Journal-World about traffic-calming devices is yet another example of a commission that is lacking direction. The election was almost a year ago and still nothing is happening. More of the same babble about traffic calming, homeless, flowers downtown (to make it “nice” and “quaint”) and quite frankly, “much ado about nothing.”

The streets are not for the kids, Mr. Highberger! The sidewalks are the appropriate place to be walking. If the kids are in the street, then the parents should perhaps take some parenting classes and take the child to see someone who was hit and now is in a wheelchair.

Wheelchairs, even those are in the street on 13th because there are no sidewalks. Austin Turney in the Journal-World article (when East Heights was being closed) commented that sidewalks would need to be built when the school closed because some students would be walking to New York School, blah and blah! Where are the sidewalks, Mr. Turney?

A traffic circle on 13th, if constructed as the others, is going to be one sad mess for the funeral processions on 13th. Perhaps the McElwain and Rumsey funeral homes should comment on the ease of navigating a roundabout with a hearse.

Mr. Woosley, do you soon plan to add a director of black tire mark removal to your staff?

To the commission: For God’s sake, do something and do it correct and nice and economical. Quit experimenting!
