Senator optimistic about school finance

Sen. Derek Schmidt, majority leader of the Kansas Senate, participated in a World Online chat Thursday and expressed optimism that the state Supreme Court would accept a newly unveiled Senate school finance proposal.

The court has found the state’s current school finance system unconstitutional.

“Well, there are no guarantees,” Schmidt wrote in response to a chat participant who asked if the new plan would meet muster. “But the bipartisan proposal that we unveiled … has support across party lines and is a good faith effort by the legislative leadership in consultation with the Governor to satisfy the requirements of the Kansas Constitution, and we’re optimistic that if we can pass this bill, the court will find it satisfactory.”

Schmidt, a Republican, is a lawyer from Independence.
