Lawrence man given 75 days for battery
A Lawrence man known for sleeping on the sidewalk in front of local businesses was sentenced to jail time Wednesday for battering a police officer who confronted him about walking in the street.
Robert “Simon” Gilmore pleaded no contest to one count of battery on a law-enforcement officer for the Dec. 30 incident that began after drivers reported seeing him walking in the road near Ninth and Connecticut streets. District Court Judge Paula Martin sentenced Gilmore to 75 days in jail, which means he will be released March 15 when given credit for the days he’s already served.
As part of the plea agreement, Dist. Atty. Charles Branson’s office dropped one count of making an improper road crossing.
