Soccer ties

To the editor:

I salute my fellow Lawrencians who gathered downtown on Saturday and cheered themselves hoarse in support of the U.S.A. soccer team. And I salute an America that has embraced this World Cup like none before. America needs soccer. We need the way soccer connects us to the rest of the world. We need days like the one I had on Friday: four people watching and commenting on the Angola vs. Mexico game - a Brazilian, a Bolivian, an Indian and me, the American. Want to get in on the fun? Look up Ghana on a map and then tune in to ESPN at 9 a.m. Thursday and watch the U.S. vs. Ghana. (And root for Italy to beat the Czechs on ESPN2 at the same time!)

Well look at the bright side. Soon there will be less soccer on TV. Not that I watch much TV, but less soccer on TV can only be a good thing.

If the stars are aligned just right (runner-up Group E), the US will play at 10:00 am on the 27th.

Unfortunately, I suspect that they'll be home before the post cards.

I would love to join you but the US isn't into footy enough to declare a national holiday when the team plays. I have, however, recorded and watched every World Cup game.
