Olathe athlete to focus on hoops at KU

McDonald's All-American McCray also dominated track at Olathe East

Few Sunflower State high schoolers have been as proficient in two sports as Danielle McCray. However, as a freshman at Kansas University, McCray will be wearing only one uniform.

A 6-foot-0 forward from Olathe East, McCray is the centerpiece of KU’s incoming basketball recruiting class and, although she captured five gold medals in the state high school track meet, McCray will not don KU track togs.

“She’ll spend all of her time with us,” KU basketball coach Bonnie Henrickson said Tuesday.

McCray’s collection of honors and awards stretch nearly from Mount Oread to downtown Olathe.

In basketball, she was a McDonald’s All-American, the Kansas Gatorade Player of the Year and the Sunflower League Player of the Year, in addition to numerous all-state and all-metro honors.

In track, McCray won five gold medals over the last two seasons in the Class 6A portion of the state high school track meet. McCray won the shot put and triple jump as both a junior and a senior, and the discus as a junior. She also won Sunflower League and Kansas Relays gold medals.

“She is, by far, the best female athlete that I’ve ever been able to coach,” Mike Wallace, O-East’s track coach since the school opened in 1992, told the Olathe Daily News.

As a basketball player, McCray scored 1,284 career points, more than any other player in O-East’s history by nearly 200 points.

“She set and broke almost every offensive record we’ve had in terms of most points scored and highest shooting percentage, and highest average and highest points in a single season,” O-East basketball coach Jeff Hulse told the Olathe newspaper.

McCray has enrolled in summer school and is working out in informal pickup games with three other KU signees – Lindsay Ballweg, a 5-10 guard from Overland Park Aquinas; Rebecca Feickert, a 6-2 center from Goodrich, N.D.; and Sade Morris, a 6-0 forward from Norman, Okla.

Three more of Henrickson’s signees will report in July. They are Kelly Kohn, a 5-9 guard from Adrian, Mich.; LaChelda Jacobs, a 5-10 guard from Mansfield, Texas; and Porscha Weddington, a 6-1 forward from Temple, Texas.

With seven newcomers, Henrickson will have a full complement of 14 players in 2006-2007.

¢ Two Seniors, Three Grants: Henrickson will have only two seniors next season – guards Shaquina Mosley and Sharita Smith – but the KU coach will have three scholarships available because forward Sophronia Sallard transferred to Pittsburgh. Sallard, who averaged 1.8 points and 1.3 rebounds as a freshman last season, won’t be eligible at Pitt until 2007-2008. Sallard is from Syracuse, N.Y.

¢ Kemp, Hallman Helping: Graduated seniors Crystal Kemp and Erica Hallman are attending summer school and will be assisting in Henrickson’s summer camps. Kemp and Hallman plan to graduate in December, then pursue pro opportunities overseas.

¢ Elite Camp: Henrickson’s Elite Camp for high schoolers and advanced junior high players will be this weekend. Morris, Ballweg and McCray attended the Elite Camp last summer.

¢ Catic Goes Camping: Sophomore guard Ivana Catic attended a four-day point-guard camp over the Memorial Day weekend on the Central Missouri State campus in Warrensburg and, according to Henrickson, “She loved it.” Catic, a 5-7 native of Serbia & Montenegro, averaged 7.7 games as a freshman last season. She’s the Jayhawks’ leading returning scorer.

¢ Two Games Needed: KU officials are working to add two games to the 2006-2007 schedule after the NCAA approved a 29-game regular season option to reduce the differential in the number of games played by teams that don’t participate in multiple-team events. Henrickson said she hopes the two additional games will be in Allen Fieldhouse. Last season, KU played its first 14 games at home.

¢ Tourney in August: Henrickson’s annual benefit golf tournament will be Aug. 19 at Alvamar Public. Last year’s inaugural tourney sold out. Proceeds will go to the basketball program and to the Lawrence Memorial Hospital Breast Center.
