Wheat harvest under way in Douglas County
Some Douglas County farmers have begun cutting wheat.
Baldwin Feed Co. Inc., 1600 High St., reported that a couple of test loads were brought to the elevator this morning. That usually signals the beginning of area wheat harvest.
Verlyn Gilges, of Baldwin Feed, said the loads weighed about 60 pounds.
“That’s decent,” he said. “I’d say several of them will get started this afternoon.”
Adrian Derousseau, general manager of the Ottawa Co-op Assn., which owns elevators in Lawrence and Midland, said the company had not yet received any loads.
“We’re ready. Just no activity yet,” Derousseau said.
