Roles clarified

To the editor:

I am writing to correct a note in a sidebar contained in the article entitled “Homeless shelter works to be better neighbor” (Journal-World, June 5).

In 2003, then-Mayor David Dunfield appointed a task force to make recommendations to coordinate and improve homeless services provided in Lawrence. The task force recommended that a Community Commission on Homelessness be formed to oversee the implementation of the plan and the continued coordination of services.

The task force also recommended the formation of a Community Cooperation Committee which would create a forum for the community to develop action plans and strategies to resolve the social issues that communities face while supporting community members experiencing homelessness. Then-Mayor Boog Highberger appointed the members of the CCH in 2005, and the Lawrence Community Shelter played no role in the formation of that committee. The CCC was formed two months ago.

The Lawrence Community Shelter recently developed an action plan with neighborhood representatives, and the CCC only played a facilitation role in that process. The LCS has a committee that worked on the action plan, arranged meetings and so on. Its members are Lew Hinshaw, Julia Butler and Carol Pilant. They deserve recognition and thanks for their work.
