Journal-World, 6News win Press Club Heart of America awards

The Lawrence Journal-World and 6News won several Kansas City Press Club 2006 Heart of America Awards last weekend.

The Journal-World won 12 awards.

First-place awards:

Jon Niccum for an entertainment story about the Confederate flag and its use in the movie “The Dukes of Hazzard.”

Eric Weslander for general reporting for a story on Kansas sex predators and for beat reporting on the same topic.

The staff of the Journal-World for best Web site.

Second-place awards:

Mark Fagan for an investigative story about a 911 call the night of the Boardwalk Apartments fire.

Joel Mathis for deadline reporting for a story about the Boardwalk Apartments fire.

Terry Rombeck for feature writing for a report on the town of Nicodemus.

Third-place awards:

Mike Belt for a deadline reporting story about flooding in Jefferson County.

Honorable mentions:

Sophia Maines for a profile of a former bully.

Dave Ranney for a feature about an inmate who wrote a song apologizing to his victim.

Rombeck for a feature about a man who studies bats.

Bill Snead for a feature about eight women who graduated more than 40 years ago from Lawrence High School.

6News won three awards:

Janet Reid, Deanna Richards and Steve Jones received second place for a story called “The Pass-Out Game.”

Reid and Dave Severence won second place for a feature called “Unwelcome Concert.”

Laura Berger and Bill Woody received third place for a feature on “The Shopocalypse.”
