Softball all-stars down MO

? Rarely would a Lawrence High player enjoy handing a championship trophy to crosstown rival Free State.

But in the case of the Mo-Kan all-star softball series, LHS’ Drew Huff didn’t mind giving the first-place trophy to Firebirds coach Pam Pine, the coach of the Kansas team, after Kansas won the best-of-three series Thursday night against Missouri’s all stars.

Kansas won the first game, 2-1, in eight innings, lost the second game, 6-4, then took the decisive third game, 1-0, in six innings.

“It’s a little different because she is my enemy during high school season,” Huff said of Pine. “But she is a nice lady, and she is a good coach, and I had fun playing under her.”

Pine didn’t mind having Huff on her side, either.

“When you play against Drew, she is going to compete against you, and I am a competitor too,” Pine said. “So I enjoyed it a lot. She is competitive so it’s nice seeing her on your own side.”

Huff, a shortstop, went a combined 4-for-9 at the plate with one RBI and one run scored.

There was another Sunflower League player Pine enjoyed coaching Thursday – a player Kansas University softball fans figure to enjoy watching next year. Shawnee Mission Northwest second baseman Amber Freeman will bring not only the Mo-Kan trophy, but also the most valuable player award for the Kansas team with her to KU.

“I think that KU will be lucky to have her,” Pine said. “She will help them out a lot.”

Another KU signee had a big night on the mound. Olathe South’s Melissa Grieb, who signed as a volleyball player, picked up both wins for the Kansas squad. The second win was a complete game two-hit shutout.

“I’m really, totally excited to go to KU,” Grieb said. “It’s been my dream for a while and I can’t wait to get up there.”

Pine was impressed by the talent she coached Thursday.

“Overall they did a good job playing together without playing together before. I’m just glad they are all gone now,” Pine said jokingly.

Huff said she was happy with how she finished her LHS career.

“It’s a good way to end it all,” Huff said. “It’s a really fun event, and I have a lot of fun with these different girls so I think it was a good way to go out.”
