State Rep. Barbara Ballard, D-Lawrence, on Friday said she would seek re-election for an eighth term in the Kansas House.

"I will continue to work hard to represent my constituents and the community of Lawrence," Ballard said.

The district covers western and central Lawrence.

Ballard is associate director for the Dole Institute of Politics at Kansas University and a former Lawrence school board member.

"My diverse experiences working at KU and the eight years I served as a member of the Lawrence school board have provided me with an understanding of the needs of higher education and K-12 schools," she said.

"We must continue to look for opportunities to bring additional funding to these areas."

Ballard has served in the House for 14 years. She is a member of the House budget committee and the subcommittee that deals with social service spending.

Nice lady, but terrible representative. I wish Lawrence wasn't so blind. She has accomplished nothing in all her years in the Legislature.

I can think of two local women that were once admirably effective in their original capacities, but are now little more than self-appointed icons, kissing babies and shaking hands.

It's as though, if you can't help them promote themselves, their demeanor makes it quite clear that you're wasting their time and they can only hold their pursed smile for so long.

I'm disappointed. I truly did admire them while I was growing up, but had higher hopes that they'd perform more as mentors than the icons they see themselves to be.

Nice lady, and an incredible representative. But, she can't get the other legislators in line. She's lost my vote this election. Even though she votes reasonably close to my positions--and has solid reasons most of the time when she does not--those other folks she works with do not. She has been unable to broker good public policy with them, and I am willing to use my franchise to try to find someone who can.

I will vote against every incumbent I can find this year, and will continue to vote out incumbents every year until our representatives start making good policy.
