4 suspects arrested after downtown beating

Victim attacked after group makes comment to girlfriend, police say

July 29, 2006

Police arrested four men early Friday for beating and robbing a 22-year-old man from the Kansas City area in the 1000 block of Massachusetts Street.

The man and his girlfriend were getting into a vehicle about 2:15 a.m. in the parking lot near 11th and Massachusetts streets when a group of men nearby made a comment to his girlfriend, according to a police report.

"He made a comment back to them, at which point they came toward him, surrounded him, struck him in the head with a beer bottle and then proceeded to hit and kick him," Lawrence Police spokesman Sgt. Dan Ward said.

Since the beginning of the year, a string of violent incidents tied to Lawrence's bar scene have prompted debate about how to improve public safety downtown. Other recent crimes include a shooting in February outside the Granada, 1020 Mass., gunshots being fired inside Last Call, 729 N.H., and repeated gun seizures from vehicles in parking lots.

Ideas floated by the city at a public forum addressing the violence include licensing standards for bars, a "Pubwatch" program and closed-circuit cameras.

The victim in Friday's case also had $20 stolen from his wallet. Witnesses saw the group of men get into a vehicle, which was stopped by police a short distance away.

One witness, who didn't want to be identified, said she saw a group of men sprinting away from the area, then saw the victim shouting for help with blood on his face.

The man was treated at Lawrence Memorial Hospital and released.

Arrested were Francis Paul Dressler of Linwood and Eudora residents Michael J. Jeffcoat, Jared D. Randel and Brandon Lee Werst. All are 20 years old.

They initially were booked into the Douglas County Jail for aggravated robbery, battery and disorderly conduct, but only battery charges had been filed against them as of Friday afternoon.

You need to stay up and go downtown at 2am and observe the police presence. It's a bunch. But then again the streets are full of drunks getting out of the bars and you can't be every where at once.

What do we have bars downtown for anyway? Some type of revenue, I bet it brings tons of business and money to downtown that the regular daily businesses dont. Yeah right...Yeah I guess bars serve you alcohol which is what everybody needs in this world. IT serves what purpose, to get drunk and have a social life or get drunk and then hang out until 200am and then get in your car and try and drive home drunk. I bet all these people that leave these bars dont take taxi's or saferide home. I am really surprised there hasnt been more accidents from drinking. Good job LPD, I have you give you guys some credit, now if we could just work on the guns and people getting their face beat in I think we will be right on. The answer is dont go to bars, stay home and drink and beat up your wife instead, just kiddin. Actually dont drink and go to church is the real answer to all of this.

an efficient allocation of police resources seems pretty easy to figure out for this problem.
the community knows that "bad things" may resonably be expected to occur at certain establishments (you've read the papers) at certain times (i.e., at night, generally from 10-2, and generally on a friday or saturday). the community has a reasonable expectation of the police to put the resources at those places and at those times.
the community has a reasonable expectation of these establishments and the police to communicate with each other, especially during these high risk times. do the police allocate resources only after an incident has occured, or do they allocate resources as suggested above?

Okay well when they go to court today and Michael tells the court that he was the only one doing the beating then we'll all know huh? By the way the girlfriend pointed out Brandon and Jared and said "they were just trying to break it up" but they got arrested anyway.

And rednekbuddha there was no beer bottle to the head like I've said a million times.

He made a comment back to them, at which point they came toward him, surrounded him, struck him in the head with a beer bottle and then proceeded to hit and kick him," Lawrence Police spokesman Sgt. Dan Ward said.

Notice the word they surrounded him. Is the witnesses report that saw the whole incorrect. I would assume the witness would be his girlfriend through all of this. Sexysenior , how do you know all this info were you there? So either the cop doesnt have his facts straight, or the witness is lying about some stuff or you dont know what you are talking about. which is it?

I think it's just rediculous that this incident would be lumped into the other 2 that all have to do with weapons. There is a big difference between people drinking all night and getting into a confrontation outside a bar and people out shooting eachother for no apparent reason.

Just another case of people in the wrong place at the wrong time with the wrong crowd.

Try beating up me and my girlfriend on Mass street, or any where else for that matter, and expect a 9mm slug in your forehead, she is one hell of a good shot. Wrong place wrong time indeed.

Uh.....A beer bottle upside the head is a weapon.

ITs none of your guys business if i was there or not. I know the truth and thats all that matters. Brandon should not have gone to jail since he was the one who was trying to break it up. Jared on other hand was drunk and tried driving home with 2 other guys in the car. Brandon is innocent and thats all that matters.
