Los Angeles ? Microsoft Corp. on Friday said it was developing a new family of digital-music and entertainment products that include both hardware and software under a project called Zune.

Microsoft, the world’s largest software company, said it plans to release the first products under the Zune brand this year.

Speculation has been widespread that Microsoft could launch a device that would compete with Apple Computer Inc.’s wildly popular iPod digital-media player.
