Morning storm brings relief from heat

Chance for another round of thunderstorms this afternoon

Heavy rainfall and thunderstorms blew into Lawrence this morning, finally bringing relief from 100-plus-degree heat that’s been baking the city this week.

“We got the rain. And we got the cooler weather,” said Matt Sayers, 6News chief meteorologist. “We ended up with about a half inch here downtown. . . . It feels very nice out, very refreshing.”

Sayers said the temperature will stay in the 60s through the morning and stay in the 70s this afternoon.

“It will be about 30 degrees cooler than it was yesterday during the sidewalk sale,” he said.

This morning’s storms brought no severe weather, such as hail, but winds were gusting up to 40 to 50 mph, taking down small branches from trees, he said.

“The rain has ended, at least temporarily,” Sayers said. He said more showers could move through in the afternoon.

At 8 a.m., Lawrence Municipal Airport’s temperature was 66 degrees, the humidity was 87 percent and winds were out of the east-northeast at 20 mph.

The average low temperature for this date is 70 degrees. The record low was 53 degrees, set in 1944.

The average high temperature for this date is 91 degrees. The record high was 108 degrees, set in 1974.

Overnight, the temperature will drop to a low of 62 degrees by early Saturday morning, with mostly clear skies, he said.

Saturday’s high will be a few degrees below average, climbing to only 87 degrees, Sayers said. Winds will be out of the north at 8 to 12 mph, he said.

Sunday’s morning low will be 61 degrees. Sunday’s afternoon high will be 89, with partly cloudy skies, he said.
