Heat index soaring to 105 or higher

Hot spell to continue through weekend

Find a cool drink and stay in the shade – the temperature is soaring to 96 degrees today, says Jennifer Schack, 6News meteorologist.

“The heat index will head up to around 105 degrees for the afternoon, if not a little bit higher,” Schack said. “It should be a hot afternoon.”

The average high temperature for this date is 90 degrees. The record high was 111 degrees, set in 1954.

At 7:15 a.m., skies were partly cloudy, Lawrence Municipal Airport’s temperature was 70 degrees, the humidity was 84 percent and winds were out of the west at 5 mph.

The average low temperature for this date is 70 degrees. The record low was 52 degrees, set in 1950.

Lawrence received about a half an inch of rain overnight as thunderstorms moved through, Schack said.

Even hotter weather is expected this weekend, she said.

Saturday’s temperatures will start at 74, but climb to 99 degrees, she said. Saturday’s heat index will be 110 degrees, she said.

Sunday’s morning low will be 76 degrees, with the afternoon temperature soaring to 100 degrees, with a heat index of 110 degrees, she said.
