Caring people

To the editor:

One of the outstanding things about this community is the number of caring people doing what they can to help others. This happens in so many ways every day.

Recently it happened in the form of the Lawrence Amateur Golf Assn.’s “Big Event” with the Men’s Open, Senior Open and Women’s Open Tournaments combined into one great weekend of golfing and raising money to help kids and adults who turn to Headquarters Counseling Center for support.

For four years, LAGA has held golf tournaments to support services like Internet safety presentations in area schools, a bereavement group for people who have lost a loved one to suicide, information about low-cost health care, counseling for people feeling overwhelmed with stresses in their life and the Phone-A-Friend line for young kids to call and chat with a safe adult.

LAGA’s “Big Event” raised $2,500 for these services. We greatly appreciate LAGA’s help in keeping our free counseling and information services available 24/7 for anyone in need. And we encourage other organizations and businesses to follow LAGA’s lead in making sure this community takes care of its members.
