Dry, hot weather in forecast through Monday

Lawrence gets about 1.5 inches of rain overnight

Lawrence got a much-needed soaking overnight, with areas in Douglas and Johnson counties getting between a tenth of an inch and 5 inches, says Jennifer Schack, 6News meteorologist. However, the storms have passed through and muggy, hot and dry conditions are expected today through the weekend, Schack said.

“We’re heading up to 93 degrees for a high today,” Schack said. “We will be topping out just above average.”

The average high temperature for this date is 90 degrees. The record high was 108 degrees, set in 1911.

Heavy rainfall moved into Johnson County about 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, then into Douglas County beginning about 10:30 p.m., Schack said. The storms prompted the National Weather Service to issue a flash flood warning for southern Douglas and Johnson counties, she said.

Doppler radar indicated that areas around Lawrence received varying amount, ranging from about half an inch to 1.5 inches, she said.

“Most of you picked up around an inch and a half of rain in the city limits and around Eudora,” she said.

Some areas in southern Douglas and central Johnson counties had as much as 5 inches, she said. Areas north of the Douglas-Jefferson county line received about half an inch, she said.

Lawrence Municipal Airport, which is northeast of the city, reported only 0.15 of an inch of rain overnight.

“It’s a good thing we pick up heavy rainfall overnight because dry weather is in the forecast through Monday,” Schack said.

At 7:50 a.m., the airport’s temperature was 73degrees, the humidity was 90 percent and winds were out of the west-northwest at 5 mph.

The morning low was 69 degrees, which is also the average low temperature for this date. The record low was 51 degrees, set in 1972.

Schack said muggy conditions will continue through this afternoon, with winds 3 to 8 mph from the north and mostly sunny skies.

Overnight, temperatures will drop off to 72 degrees for a low by early Thursday morning, she said.

Thursday’s afternoon high will climb to 95 degrees, with southeast winds 5 to 12 mph.

Even hotter conditions are expected Friday, with morning temperature will starting at 73 degrees, eventually reaching 97 degrees.

“Heat indices through the weekend will be in the triple digits and stay there through Monday,” Schack said. “Dry weather is in the forecast through Monday.”
