Yahoo! editor, LHS alum featured

Srinija Srinivasan, who grew up in Lawrence and graduated from Lawrence High School, appeared earlier this month in a Parade magazine story about Americans who immigrated to the United States.

Srinivasan, editor-in-chief of Yahoo!, told the magazine about being born in Chandigarh, India, and moving to Lawrence when she was 3 months old, as her father had landed a job as a math professor at Kansas University.

She attended college at Stanford University, then studied in Japan for six months.

“It was there I met Jerry Yang and David Filo,” she told Parade. “In 1995, Jerry and David asked me to join them in a venture called Yahoo! We felt we were yahoos, because we really didn’t know what we were doing. But they had a vision of where the online world was going and asked me to organize the sorting system for a table of contents to the Internet.

“It’s not like we said, ‘We’re going to create a hierarchy for the sum total of human knowledge.’ We just wanted to help bring the Internet to life. I think we’ve done that.”
